Burtonwood Army Depot 1967
by
Michael Autry
My name is Michael Autry currently living in Florence, Kentucky. I enlisted in the U.S. army in 1966. First assignment was Orleans, France with the 15th military police detachment (Criminal investigations department) I was a serious incident report clerk working for Major Sully H. Fontaine. I was on the last flag detail to have taken down the American flag in Orleans, France as we departed for England.
My assignment at Burtonwood U.S. Army Depot was
with the provost marshals office to help set up the vehicle registration
department. Which involved collecting taxes, issuing driver’s license, parking
decals and much more for the incoming troops? I worked with and shared the
office with a number of different activities. The provost marshal Cpt. Cobb, the
vehicle registrar SSgt. Reynolds and SSgt Ratliff, Harry Terrieri the base news
paper “UKelele” - if I can contact Harry he would still have the original
news paper printed for the army depot. The assignment for the last year was to
be the Unit Mail clerk. If you worked or was stationed at the Burtonwood
U.S. army depot in 1967 thru 1969 we might have met. I either issued your driver
license or
handed your mail to you with a smile. I married a English girl from Eccles, Monton
Green. Sandra Leigh. We lived off base in an area called Appleton. I must
mention the very difficult day of the copter crash with col.
Grabowski and the rest of the crew. We were all very upset.
I have many pictures of the base, civilian and army personnel which I would
share with you for every one to see. May be others from this time period would
see my posting and write in and send pictures. I have many stories to tell of
the base and my experience.

This is the building that we lived in on base. it was abandoned empty since the U.S. air force left it in 1955 -1958. I was looking at the gallery of pictures put in by Edwin R. Floyd and realized that it was the same building I was to live in on base. pictures are of my self and Harry Terreri painting and cleaning and setting up our lockers.
Pictures are of U.S. army funeral detail that i had the honor to be on at Burtonwood U.S. army depot. pictures are of the men on the detail. Federals for British and Scotsmen that enlisted in the U.S. army and died in Vietnam and brought back home for the funeral. nine funerals in all.

The pictures are of Mike Autry and Miss World. Part of my job in the vehicle registration department was to collect the taxes and take them to Blackpool England to be paid for all the troops. while I was there on the pier I met Miss World.
Pictures are of army and civilian personnel and the big red bus that brought them to work each day.
