BURTONWOOD ASSOCIATION’S
WEST COAST SPRING FLING
By Lloyd Steele
The California Sunday Brunch group held a FOUR DAY
FLING for all Burtonwood Association members and their spouses at
Sam’s Town Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas, from March 31st though April 4th 2003.
Jean Hall and her staff made all the arrangements for four great days for
those of us who attended. She arranged for a great Hospitality Room where
we could enjoy meeting together. We could get a nice Continental Breakfast
in the Hospitality Room each morning, and have a Happy Hour (s) in afternoon and
a late nightcap before retiring for the night.
All were given a basket of goodies upon arrival and were given chances to win
another of these baskets via a raffle or blind auction. Several raffles
were held each day some for cash or gift certificates. Six bottles of bird
seed were provided to try and locate the treasure hidden inside the bottles
which was a challenge to find this
item among the bird seed and then identify what those treasures was
another challenge.
At total of $699 was raised for the center during this Spring Fling.
Some members of the Burtonwood Association's Long Beach California Sunday Brunch
Group who were unable to attend this Spring Fling will be sending in their
donation to Jean Hall for the Heritage Center that will be added to this total.
Jean Hall was given great assistance from start to finish in this Spring Fling
from:
Dolores Webb
Cathy (Hall) Hammond
Linda Hall
Bendt
Dori McIntyre
Thanks to Jean and her Staff the Hospitality Room was a great success.
On Wednesday we went to a Las Vegas British Pub called the Crown and Anchor and
enjoyed some English food and drink. Had a lovely time at this Pub as it was
almost as
good as being back in the UK. We all enjoyed this bit of Las Vegas/Britain that
was
arranged for us at this Spring Fling.
On Thursday evening there was the Banquet where the American
Legion Color Guard
brought in the Stars and Strips and we recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our
flag and
sang our National Anthem. After a great meal we were treated to a speaker
(STRONGIN/STRONGIN GROUP)
read a Franklin D. Roosevelt Fireside Chat from 1940 prior to our entry
into WWII that
he thought could be applied to the world situation with Iraq today.
